PC Data Ranks iBook Number One Portable in U.S.

CUPERTINO, California—January 25, 2000—Apple's iBook™ has earned the number one spot among all portable computers in the U.S. retail market for the fourth quarter of 1999, according to PC Data's Portables Hardware Tracking Service (October-December, 1999). Also, according to the same report, the combined sales of Apple's iBook and PowerBook® portable computer lines gave Apple® a 10 percent share of all portables in the U.S. retail market for the same quarter.*
“Apple's results speak for themselves—the Company is delivering a strong portable line for both consumer and professional customers,” said Stephen Baker, PC Data senior analyst and director of Hardware Research. “Apple is poised to continue their success going forward with these products.”
“We are delighted that iBook is the hottest selling portable in the U.S.,” said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. “iBook is delivering the features and power that consumers and educators want in a portable.”
Launched July 1999, iBook features a 12.1-inch TFT display; a PowerPC G3 processor; a built-in 56K modem and 10/100BASE-T Ethernet networking; and a built-in USB port and CD-ROM drive. iBook is the first “wireless ready” portable computer, with two built-in antennas and an internal slot for Apple's AirPort™ wireless networking card (optional). With AirPort wireless networking, up to 10 computers can share one Internet connection at speeds up to 11 megabits per second and distances up to 150 feet (half a football field) all without wires. iBook's design innovations include a rubber-coated translucent enclosure for durability, a pullout handle for safe carrying, and a unique “latch-less” closing mechanism for faster and easier access.
