Apple’s Mac OS X Adoption Soars With More Than 5 Million Users and 5,000 Native Applications

MACWORLD EXPO, SAN FRANCISCO - January 7th, 2003
Apple today announced that it is entering 2003 with more than 5 million active Mac OS X users and more than 5,000 native Mac OS X applications. This year also marks the first “All Mac OS X” Macworld Expo with every developer on the show floor featuring Mac OS X products.
“Mac OS X really came of age with the release of Jaguar last fall, and since then the momentum has been off the charts”, said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With more than 5 million of our users running Mac OS X, and more than 5,000 native applications, we can now say that the Mac OS X transition is nearly complete”.
Almost 300,000 educators have taken advantage of Apple’s “X for Teachers” programme, launched in October, that gives a free copy of Mac OS X version 10.2 to every K-12 teacher in the US. Today this programme was extended to include teachers in Europe (see separate release). The free copy of Mac OS X v10.2 includes Apple’s award-winning applications for digital photography, music and moviemaking. Apple today announced plans to extend “X for Teachers” until 31st March, 2003.
“Apple’s “X for Teachers” programme puts the latest technology directly into the hands of teachers”, said Warren Williams, Grossmont Union High School District’s assistant superintendent, Information and Technology Services. “The digital hub applications included with Mac OS X give teachers more tools to engage students and help make the curriculum come alive with easy integration of digital media into lessons and presentations”.
