Apple collects data about your use of Classwork to provide and improve the app.

Student Data

When you launch Classwork as a student while signed in to your Managed Apple Account, Apple, on behalf of your School or Institution (“Institution”), collects data on activities that your teacher assigns to you through Classwork, such as when you mark an activity as complete and your feedback on assigned activities and apps. If your Institution enables the Student Progress feature in Apple School Manager, Apple will receive data about your progress on assigned activities from progress-reporting apps (“progress data”). Apple uses this data to provide Classwork, including features that allow your teacher to get a better understanding of your and your classmates’ learning progress. Your Institution is responsible for your participation in the Student Progress feature under the Apple School Manager Agreement, and has the ability to opt students out of this feature upon their request. If you want to opt out of the Student Progress feature, or to delete your progress data, contact your Institution.

Apple also collects non-personally identifiable usage data against group identifiers that are not associated with your Managed Apple Account, to provide and improve Classwork. For example, Apple may collect usage data associated with group identifiers when you view certain assessments, assignments and pages within the app, or start or continue an assessment or assignment activity, to better understand how Classwork is used. When you launch Classwork, we may also collect non-personally identifiable usage data about your interaction with the app and the app’s installation.

Teacher Data

When you launch Classwork as a teacher while signed in to your Managed Apple Account, Apple, on behalf of your Institution, collects data on your assignments, such as details on assigned activities and apps, the classes you teach and student names. Apple uses this data to provide Classwork, including features such as insights and exit tickets. Apple also collects non-personally identifiable usage data against group identifiers that are not associated with your Managed Apple Account, to provide and improve the app. For example, we may collect usage data on when you view certain assessments or assignments and pages within the app. We may also collect usage data on how you create, edit, delete and otherwise manage students, classes, assessments and assignments. When you launch Classwork, we may also collect non-personally identifiable data about your request for a Managed Apple Account. For example, if you launch Classwork to request a Managed Apple Account from your Institution and subsequently launch Classwork while signed in to your Managed Apple Account, we will collect data on your completion of the onboarding process.

Improving Classwork

Your Institution may allow Apple to process your Classwork usage data, including the student and teacher data described above, using techniques such as machine learning for the purpose of improving Classwork. Before data is processed, it is subject to privacy-preserving techniques such as differential privacy so that it cannot be linked to you. For example, Apple may process your de-identified or aggregated Classwork data to understand trends in usage, customise user experience and develop new education features for Classwork. The first time you access Classwork while signed in to your Managed Apple Account after your Institution enables this feature, you will receive an on-screen notification. Your Institution has the ability to opt individual students and teachers out of this feature. To opt out, contact your Institution.

Information processed by Apple on behalf of your Institution in connection with its provision of services requiring a Managed Apple Account under the Apple School Manager Agreement will be treated in accordance with Section 3 and Exhibit A of the Apple School Manager Agreement, which can be found at school.apple.com.
